Judith LapsLaps for Life Story

In May of 2002, Judith Ann Girardi became the Head Coach of the Wedgewood Country Club Swim team in Central Ohio. She inspired a team of 155 young swimmers to be the best they could be, driving them from sixth place to second place in their league, in her first season. Just two days after the season championship, Judith was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer.

Judith's swimmers and their parents responded with compassion and action. In less than 30 days they organized their first of many Swim-A-Thon events to support the Girardi family and other families battling breast cancer.

Judith continued to coach, and her team won . . .two league championships in a row! In September of 2004, this courageous coach lost her battle with cancer but she had won the hearts of a huge community of swimmers. In May of 2005, these swimmers launched Laps For Life, to celebrate Judith, promote her values and support others battling breast cancer.Nick and Judith

What makes us different?

  • The original Laps for Life idea came from Judith’s swimmers, who wanted to make a difference in the lives of patients battling cancer
  • More than 50% of the Laps for Life organization is youth and teens
  • Many Laps for Life events and programs are led by teens, providing a unique leadership opportunity for our youth
  • 100 Percent of funds raised at Laps for Life events go directly to cancer patients and their families
